Europe’s ETF Horizon: How are our six ETF predictions for 2026 tracking at the mid-year mark? - Waystone

Europe’s ETF Horizon: How are our six ETF predictions for 2026 tracking at the mid-year mark?

At the start of the year, Waystone made six bold predictions about where the European ETF market was heading in 2026. Now, six months in, we're revisiting those forecasts to see how market developments are unfolding and it’s a positive story so far.

The data presents an encouraging picture of industry growth, with most of our predictions either on track or ahead of schedule. New issuers are arriving at a record pace, ETF inflows are exceptionally strong, and active ETFs continue to gain momentum. The European ETF market is delivering on the scale, resilience and momentum that we believe underpin its long-term growth story.

Here’s how each prediction is progressing at the mid-year mark:

      Share

Prediction 1: 20+ new issuers to launch UCITS ETFs in EuropeProgress at mid-year: 15 new issuers launched (75%)

With 15 new issuers entering the UCITS ETF market by the halfway point of the year, this prediction is progressing strongly and is already at 75% of our full-year forecast. Asset managers from Europe and around the world continue to see the UCITS ETF market as a compelling growth opportunity, backed by expanding investor adoption and a well-established infrastructure framework. We’re confident this prediction will be comfortably achieved by year-end and may well be exceeded.

20+ new issuers will launch UCITS ETFs in Europe.

UCITS white-label platform are expected to double in 2026.

Prediction 2: UCITS white-label platform AUM to double in 2026 to $11.2bnProgress at mid-year: AUM up 28.5%

White-label platform AUM is growing steadily, though currently tracking behind our ambitious full-year forecast, with market volatility and geopolitical uncertainty weighing on asset growth across the industry. However, issuer demand for outsourced ETF infrastructure remains as strong as ever, as managers look for faster, more efficient routes into the European ETF market. With new issuers and product launches expected in the second half, there’s a credible path for white-label platform AUM growth to accelerate.

Prediction 3: European ETF inflows to hit a record $470bn, including $50bn in active ETFsProgress at mid-year: $259bn total inflows (55%), including $26bn into active ETFs (52%)

European ETF inflows have already passed the halfway mark of our full-year prediction, despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, and active ETFs have done the same. The strength of investor demand underlines the growing role of ETFs among individual and institutional investors alike, and it reinforces our conviction that 2026 will be another record-breaking year for European ETF inflows. We expect this prediction to reach or exceed the targets by year-end.

European ETF inflows are predicted to hit a record $470bn.

200+ active UCITS ETFs to launch in Europe.

Prediction 4: 200+ active UCITS ETFs to launch in EuropeProgress at mid-year: 90 active ETFs launched (45%)

Active ETF launches continue at a strong pace, with nearly half of our full-year prediction achieved at the midway point. Active ETFs remain one of the fastest-growing and most innovative corners of the European market, with sustained investor appetite and an ever-broadening range of strategies adopting the ETF structure. Given this momentum, we expect to see this prediction realised by year-end.

Prediction 5: Ireland’s ETF investor tax rate to decrease further from 38% to 35%Progress at mid-year: Continuing to monitor for developments

This prediction was always expected to be a second-half story. While there’s been no formal announcement yet, discussions around the EU Savings and Investments Union and the competitiveness of European capital markets continue to support the case for further reform. We anticipate developments later in the year as policymakers weigh measures to encourage long-term investment and improve investor outcomes.

Ireland’s ETF investor tax cut expected to decrease to 35%.

Slow adoption of ETF share classes in Europe.

Prediction 6: ETF share class adoption in Europe to be slower than industry expectationsProgress at mid-year: Tracking as predicted

Market developments have reflected our expectations for this prediction. Despite significant industry discussion and regulatory progress in certain markets, there remains limited evidence of widespread issuer uptake of ETF share classes. Operational, tax, regulatory and commercial considerations continue to shape adoption decisions, with issuers preferring established ETF structures and familiar market-entry routes. We expect this trend to hold through the second half of the year, with the prediction remaining firmly on track.

The mid-year scorecard: Market developments are on track with our predictions

Six months into the year, our 2026 outlook is tracking well, with several predictions ahead of schedule and the others continuing to develop positively. It’s a strong endorsement of the fundamentals driving the European ETF market, and we look forward to seeing how the second half of the year unfolds.
