Álvaro Montes is a financial services professional with several years of relevant exposure gained across the banking, insurance, asset management and ManCo businesses, along with representative industry bodies.
At Waystone, Álvaro leads the development of large-scale risk advisory projects for high profile platforms, from management companies to fund clients. Álvaro acts as Chief Risk Officer and ensures ongoing reporting to the Board, including setting the risk rating of entities in accordance with the risk framework and standards. In addition, Álvaro is a member of the Risk Committee and is based in Ireland, supporting Waystone’s operations globally.
Álvaro joined Waystone from MPMF Fund Mgmt Ltd, part of the Maples Group, where he held the role of Vice President – Investment Risk. As part of this position, Álvaro led the Fund Risk function, in addition to acting as Designated Person for AIFs, UCITS and FMCs for a wide variety of clients and was responsible for the development of the risk governance framework. Previously, Álvaro spent four years at Mediolanum, in a second line of defence capacity, where he led the enterprise risk reporting unit with oversight of €40+ billion AuM for a diverse range of asset classes and funds regulated in different jurisdictions. Prior to that, Álvaro held positions in AIB Capital Markets for over three years within the Treasury ALM function, where he was responsible for the ongoing risk management of Group’s balance sheet, with a focus on IRRBB and dealing desk structural positions.
Álvaro graduated with a MSc in Economic and Financial Risk Analysis and also holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Additionally, Álvaro is a certified FRM® (Financial Risk Manager) awarded by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) since 2015, and a former member of the Investment Risk Working Group for Irish Funds.
